Currently related products are just randomly selected from the same category and tags. More often than not the products displayed are not related or comparable. The purpose of this block is to show similar products to the customer, so that the customer may buy one of these. Currently the functionality is not effective, but it can be. Here is how:

Please also consider attributes, price and popularity for displaying related products.

Please add a setting to prioritise products with a higher price, so that products that are displayed that are a little more expensive than the current product. (Sort by price is not useful for this)

This would display products that are closely related, popular and more expensive.
